Marketing Program Objectives

The Marketing Program works with all VIDA Divisions, UVI Cooperative Extension, the V.I. Department of Tourism and other Government Agencies to:

  • Create and strengthen marketing linkages between agri-businesses (farmers) and buyers interested in V.I. agricultural products.
  • Provide agri-business consultations to farmers interested in expanding their agri-business marketing efforts.
  • Educate consumers about the benefits of buying local produce: Superior taste,  improved nutrition,longer produce shelf-life.
  • Plan & attend culinary events that promote locally grown produce and locally made value-added products to chefs and restaurateurs.
  • Apply for & manage grants to supplement funding for marketing endeavors in the V.I.

 

Products Marketed in the V.I.

 

 

The Virgin Fresh brand will be applied to quality V.I. products including:

  • Fresh fruits & vegetables
  • Meats: lamb, goat, pork & beef
  • Apiary products: honey, beeswax, etc.
  • Poultry, eggs & dairy products
  • Locally produced value-added products such as jams, hot sauces, etc.

 

Target Markets

  • Restaurants, caterers and hotels.
  • Farmers’ markets, supermarkets.
  • School lunch programs, hospital cafeterias & Government agencies that purchase food.
  • Local wholesalers &/or exporters.
  • Individual consumers & organizations.

 

Marketing Services For the Restaurateur, Retailer and Wholesaler

The Marketing Program provides services to market fresh food to restaurateurs, wholesalers and retailers:

  • Product Availability Updates: provides a listing of products and prices from various farms throughout the V.I. as they become available – sent via email or fax.
  • Quality Standard Information: provides information on USDA fruit and vegetable quality standard information.
  • Postharvest Storage: provides access to temporary cold storage facilities for agri-businesses and buyers.
  • Produce Delivery: facilitates arrangements for produce delivery by the farmer or VIDOA to participating restaurants.

To protect the health of the Virgin Islands livestock and poultry populations, Virgin Islands animal health officials, farmers and animal owners must be able to quickly and effectively trace an animal disease to its source.
