National Farmers Market Week

(July 19, 2010)

National Farmers’ Market Week will be celebrated nationally August 1-7, 2010. Farmers’ markets represent an integral part of the consumer/farm linkage and have continued to rise in popularity, mostly due to the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm.

The VIDOA along with other state departments of agriculture throughout the nation will engage in activities to celebrate the significant contributions of this important segment of our community. Farmers markets allow consumers to have access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce, enable farmers the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with their customers, and cultivate consumer loyalty with farmers.

This correspondence serves as an invitation for you to celebrate National Farmers’ Market Week in partnership with the VIDOA during planned activities throughout the Territory. Farmers’ markets for all three islands will be held as follows– August 6th in the Cruz Bay Park on St. John (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.); August 6th at the Ann E. Heyliger Vegetable Market on St. Croix (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.); and August 7 at the Abattoir on St. Thomas (8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).

Please contact our offices for more information or to indicate your interest in participating in any of the market activities no later than July 23, 2010 at 778-0998 on St. Croix, 774-5182 on St. Thomas, and 776-6274 on St. John.

Thank you in advance for your support as we look forward to celebrating and observing National Farmers’ Market Week in partnership with our farmers.
